Honest comparison

How Claudia compares

Claudia is a private AI assistant for iPhone. Bring your own AI key, with no account, no Claudia server, and nothing tracked. Here is how it sits next to the big chat apps and the privacy-first apps, and how it differs from the self-hosted agents we write about. We have tried to be fair, including where Claudia is not the right pick.

Competitor details verified June 2026 from each vendor's own pages (linked at the bottom). Pricing and privacy terms change often, so check the source links before you rely on a specific number.

Claudia vs the big AI apps

The well-known apps are polished and have a free hosted tier you can start using in seconds. Claudia trades that for privacy and control: no account to create, nothing stored on a Claudia server, and your own AI key instead of a monthly subscription. Both approaches are valid. This is the trade.

App Account Where your data goes Price Use your own key Stored on device
Claudia None No Claudia server. Chats stay on your device. Your prompt goes to the provider you pick. Free app, bring your own key Yes, 7 providers Yes
ChatGPT Required OpenAI servers. Trains on your chats by default, opt out in settings.3 Free, Plus $20/mo9 No No, cloud
Claude Required Anthropic servers. Trains on consumer chats unless you opt out.6 Free, Pro $20/mo No No, cloud
Google Gemini Google account Google servers. Some chats are human-reviewed unless you turn off Gemini Apps Activity.13 Free, AI Pro $19.99/mo12 No No, cloud
Perplexity Required Perplexity servers. Free queries may be used to improve models, paid plans can opt out.14 Free, Pro $20/mo14 No No, cloud
Microsoft Copilot Optional, sign in for history and voice Microsoft servers. Signed-in history and personalization.17 Free, paid via Microsoft 36518 No No, cloud
Pal Chat None Developer collects no data. History stays on-device, your key talks to providers.19 Free, Pal Pro $6.99/mo19 Yes, bring your own key Yes
Private LLM None Fully on-device. Runs offline, nothing leaves the phone.20 One-time purchase, no subscription20 Runs local open models, no key needed Yes

Claudia stores your chats on your device and runs no server of its own, but it is not fully offline. When you send a message, your prompt goes to the AI provider whose key you connected. Private LLM is the one app here that runs the model on the phone itself, with the trade-off of smaller on-device models.

Claudia vs self-hosted AI agents

These are not really Claudia's rivals. They solve a different problem. Claudia is a personal assistant that lives on your phone with no setup. The tools below are platforms you host yourself on a computer or a server, which gives you far more power and far more to maintain. Many people use both.

Tool What it is Runs where Setup effort Privacy model Best for
Claudia Personal AI app for iPhone Your iPhone, no server Low: install and add a key No Claudia server, chats on-device, inference to your provider A private pocket assistant with zero infrastructure
OpenClaw Self-hosted AI gateway and 24/7 agent Your computer or a VPS Meaningful: config files, a few hours Self-hosted, data stays on your hardware Always-on automation across your messaging apps
NemoClaw NVIDIA security sandbox for OpenClaw, alpha A locked-down container on a host High and technical Governed sandbox with strict file and network rules Running OpenClaw under enterprise security
Hermes Self-hosted personal assistant Your VPS, in Docker, 24/7 Moderate: about 45 minutes Self-hosted, data and keys on your server Scheduled jobs and memory across messaging apps
n8n Open-source workflow automation Self-host or n8n Cloud Moderate Self-host keeps data on your server27 Connecting apps and AI into automated workflows

The OpenClaw, NemoClaw, and Hermes descriptions match our own plain-English guides for those tools. If you want the full picture, read the guides.

The honest version

No app is best at everything. Here is where Claudia is the right choice, and where it is not.

Where Claudia wins

  • Privacy posture. No account, no Claudia server, chats on your device, and an App Store label of Data Not Collected.
  • No subscription to us. You bring a key you may already have and pay the provider directly for what you use.
  • Choice. Seven providers in one calm app, so you can switch models without switching apps.
  • It actually does things. Reads files, drafts messages, and handles calendar and reminders, and it asks before it changes anything.

Where Claudia is not the pick

  • No free hosted tier. You need a paid API key, and you pay per use from the first message. The big apps give you a real $0 tier to start.
  • Less brand and a smaller ecosystem than ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, with fewer plugins and integrations.
  • iPhone only for now. No Android and no web app.
  • Not fully local. Your prompt still goes to the provider you chose. If you want the model on the device itself, an app like Private LLM fits better.
